RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs - Labour Day long weekend traffic incidents
Superintendent Howard Eaton, Officer–In-Charge, RCMP, “K” Division Traffic Services, and Superintendent Rick Gardner, of the Alberta Sheriffs South Operations, praised Alberta drivers for their over-all good driving during the long weekend.
Throughout the long weekend, Integrated Traffic Unit members were busy conducing Checkstops and traffic operations at various locations across the province, primarily focusing on dangerous behaviours including impaired driving, unsafe speed, non-use of seat belts and distracted driving.
“Given that road and weather conditions were perfect and the significant increase in traffic volume, most Albertans were responsible safe drivers and enjoyed a great long weekend.” said Supt. Eaton, OIC, RCMP, “K” Division Traffic Services.
Unfortunately there were some individuals who ignored common sense and placed others travelers at risk with their dangerous behaviours. The following are examples of situations encountered by Integrated Traffic Unit members over the weekend:
- 36-year-old male was caught driving his motorcycle at 181 km/h in 110 km/h on QE II near Carstairs.
- 24-year-old male from Montreal was caught driving his motorcycle at 177 km/h in the posted 110 km/h on Hwy 2near on QE II near Crossfield.
- 46-year-old male driver of a Corvette was caught driving 180 km/h on QE II near Ponoka.
- Motorcyclist stopped for driving 235 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, Highway 762 near Turner Valley.
- A motor vehicle was stopped near Elk Island Park on Highway 16 for no plates. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was linked to a serious criminal investigation in Cold Lake.
- A reported impaired driver near Stony Plain was actually an individual in medical distress. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The following individuals were interdicted along the Bow Valley Corridor:
- A male from Calgary caught driving 212 km/h. He was charged with dangerous driving, speeding and careless driving.
- A male from Calgary caught driving 192 km/h. He was charged with dangerous driving, speeding and careless driving.
- A male from Vancouver was caught driving 180 km/h. He was charged with dangerous driving, speeding and careless driving.
- A male from Calgary was caught driving 166 km/h. He was charged with Drive While Prohibited (CC), possession of drugs, and possession of a prohibited weapon, speeding, careless driving. A female passenger was also charged with possession of drugs.
- A male from Fort McMurray was caught driving 163 km/h. He was charged with speeding and careless driving.
- Two male drivers from Edmonton were caught driving 150 km/h. They were charged with racing on a highway, speeding and careless driving.
- Integrated Traffic Services members in Athabasca assisted in the apprehension of a distraught male attempting suicide; they were successful in helping save a life.
“Unfortunately we also had collisions in rural locations which resulted in the deaths of three individuals,” said Supt. Rick Gardner. “These are exactly the types of tragedies that our people work hard at trying to prevent.
Superintendent Eaton says that, “I think the vast majority of Albertans support our Integrated Traffic Units efforts and want to know that the highways are safe places. Our enforcement interventions are aimed at those individuals who commit serious offences and dangerous driving behaviours on our highways and we will continue our efforts to ensure the highways are safe for all Albertans.”

The male could not be located after the collision for a period of time. STARS Air Ambulance responded, along with Police Dog Services, and Fire/Emergency Medical Services personnel on quads searching the area. He was located in a nearby residence and treated in hospital for minor injuries.
