Semi rolled over on Highway 22 T. Lucas photos and video |
On Sunday afternoon December 15 at 12:09 pm Crowsnest Pass RCMP issued a public advisory that due to very strong winds along Highway 22 from Highway 3 to Highway 532 (Chain Lakes area), any vehicles towing trailers were advised to not travel on Highway 22.
According to Pincher Creek Emergency services Chief Dave Cox the first call involved a semi trailer blown over by the wind. Pincher Creek Emergency Services was delayed in their response due to the dispatch of the call going to Calgary. Crowsnest Pass Ambulance was originally called out to the accident, and then Pincher Creek Rescue and Lundbreck Fire were also called.
During the time that emergency workers were on scene of that accident they saw two other semi trucks blown over, and other smaller vehicles blown over.
The next call again involved a semi trailer blown over in the wind on Highway 22. Lundbreck Fire, Pincher Creek Rescue and Pincher Ambulance responded to this accident.
For both accidents emergency workers managed traffic on the restricted roadway until the overturned vehicles could be moved from the highway into the ditch.
As there were multiple agencies that responded to these accidents the number of people transported to hospital and their condition is not available at this time.
Several semi trucks were parked on the side of Highway 22 in the same area as the multiple rollovers, unable to safely continue travelling in the wind. Other recreational and transportation trailers were also observed in the ditch. On Sunday evening Volker Stevin was stationed at the intersection of Highways 3 and 22 to prevent high vehicles, large vehicles, and vehicles with trailers from entering Highway 22.
According to a local TransAlta representative they measured a wind gust at one of the turbines at the Summerview wind farm (approximately 20 km west of Highway 22) at 42 metres per second, which translates to 151.2 kilometres an hour.
According to Chief Cox Compton Gas Plant on Highway 22 recorded gusts up to 159 km / hour, and a constant speed of 140 km/hour during Sunday, December 15.
