Lac La Biche RCMP continue search for missing boat occupant
On August 30, 2013 at approximately 8:30pm Lac La Biche RCMP received an 911 call in regards to an overboard boater on Lac La Biche Lake.
RCMP from Lac La Biche as well as Lac La Biche Fire Department and Ambulance attended an area approximately 15K west of Lac La Biche, Alberta.
Police learned that a 62 year old male and a 69 year old male were on Lac La Biche lake removing commercial fishing nets at approximately 7:30pm. A wave then struck the boat causing the 69 year old male to fall out of the boat and go into the water. The 62 year old male also ended up in the water as the small 12' fishing boat began to take on water.
Neither of the males on board were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. The weather in the area was also poor with the water surface being rough due to wind gusts.
The 62 year old male managed to swim to shore and call 911 to ask for help. RCMP were assisted by Lac La Biche Fish and Wildlife and the Lac La Biche Fire Department with the search. Upon the arrival of emergency responders the boat could no longer be located and it believed that it had sunk into the lake. Emergency responders were not able to locate the 69 year old male either.
The 62 year old male was transported to hospital by ambulance where he was treated and released.
Throughout the day of August 31, 2013 Lac La Biche RCMP in conjunction with Alberta Parks and Conservation Officers, Alberta Fish and Wildlife Officers and Little Divide Search and Rescue conducted a search for the missing 69 year old male, who has been identified as Donald STRATTON from the Lac La Biche area.
Emergency and search personnel conducted a search of the water and shore of Lac La Biche lake in the area in which this incident took place. A small amount of debris from the vessel was located washed up on shore approximately four kilometers from where Mr. STRATTON was last observed. Personnel also located the boat that had sunk and was entangled in a fishing net at the location. Police then utilized the RCMP Helicopter from "K" Division Air Services to assist with an air search.
After extensive searching Police were not able to locate STRATTON.
The search for STRATTON will continue on September 1, 2013 in which the Northern Alberta Aquatic Rescue Society will attend and assist Lac La Biche RCMP by deploying sonar devices and divers to conduct an under water search for STRATTON.
The RCMP ask that if anyone knows a current location for STRATTON or may have witnessed this incident to please contact Police as it would assist with the investigation.
