Mining Week takes place in British Columbia from May 11 -17. To celebrate and raise awareness Teck Coal offers free tours at a number of their operations. "This is one of the many ways we engage with the public and raise awareness about Teck’s focus on safety, community and sustainability, as well as the importance of mining to region. Tours have been offered in different forms for many years through the various mines in the region," explained Teck Communication Coordinator Shannon Parnell.
"It’s an opportunity to see big machinery in operation, and learn about the mining process and Teck’s commitment to environmental responsibility. People tell us they find it interesting to see what is involved in the mining process, learn how the steelmaking and coal mined right here in the Elk Valley is used to produce many products we all rely on every day. Of course, they like seeing the really big trucks and tires."
"This has been an excellent opportunity to work collaboratively with the Chamber to showcase Sparwood as a great place to live and work. We’re very thankful for their support and expertise and, with tour proceeds going to local Chamber initiatives, this partnership benefits the entire community. People have to ride the bus and they must pre-register with the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce. There is a tour guide on the bus who will be explaining various topics including: the history of Teck and the mine site, the formation and processing of the coal, the types of equipment and other interesting facts."
May 12th – Fording River Operations

Everyone must register with the Sparwood Chamber 250-425-2423 to take part on a tour. If you cannot take advantage of mining week tours, summer tours are offered.
