Missing boater located - Update

Today, September 6, 2013 RCMP Lac La Biche officers with the assistance of Fish and Wildlife officers recovered the body of Donald Stratton, 69-years-old, who had been missing from his capsized vessel on Lac La Biche lake on August 30, 2013.

At approximately 10:00 am today, RCMP officers received a call from a local helicopter pilot who had observed what he believed to be a human body in the water.  Officers attended the location as indicated by the pilot and retrieved a body of Donald Stratton.

The RCMP would like to thank the public and the assisting partners for their assistance in this search and recovery.  Mr. Stratton was not wearing a life jacket when he was located.

Fatal collision south of Longview kills motorcyclist

Shortly before 5:00 pm Thursday, September 5, 2013 the Turner Valley RCMP were called to a fatal collision approximately 13 KM south of Longview, Alberta on Provincial Highway 22.  Investigation has shown a southbound single occupant motorcycle was struck head on by a north bound F350 pick-up truck that crossed into the oncoming lane.  The driver of the motorcycle, a 68 year old Calgary male suffered fatal injuries upon contact.  The occupants of the F350 were uninjured but taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

Police are still investigating this matter and attempting to complete next of kin notifications.  Fatigue is believed to be a factor in this collision

Paul Band deceased male identified, murder suspects identified, one sought by police

On September 2, 2013 at about 11:30, Cold Lake RCMP officers responded to a call of a male lying in the ditch on Range Road 425A (Beaverdam road) in the vicinity of secondary road 897.  It was soon discovered that the male was deceased.

RCMP Major Crime investigators have now confirmed the identity of the deceased male as Gregory Gannaw 19-years-old of Edmonton, Alberta.  An autopsy conducted by the office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton on September 4, 2013 determined the manner of death to be a homicide.

RCMP investigation identified 2 suspects responsible for the murder of Gregory Gannaw and as a result, arrest warrants for First Degree Murder were issued for the following 2 men:

Garrett Blackman, 23-years-old, of Cold Lake First Nations, Alberta and Stoney Bearhead, 26-years-old, of Paul Band First Nations, Alberta.

Cold Lake detachment officers and RCMP Major Crimes Unit are continuing their investigation in the homicide of Gregory Gannaw.  Officers are seeking the public's assistance in locating Garrett Blackman and for any information in regards to this homicide.

RCMP Red Deer City and Lacombe Police Service Charge Male after Pursuit

On Wednesday, September 4th, 2013, a Red Deer City Traffic Enforcement Officer conducted a traffic stop and was assaulted by the driver of the vehicle who then fled the scene. The identity of the driver was obtained prior to the suspect fleeing in his vehicle. Police were not able to immediately locate the suspect and a warrant for his arrest was obtained.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., the Lacombe Police Service was made aware of the outstanding warrant. They also received information that the suspect was possibly at a residence in Lacombe and was armed with a gun. Three (3) Lacombe Police Service members responded to the area in Southeast Lacombe in an effort to locate the male.

Officers approached the residence on foot and observed the male getting into a vehicle. Despite being ordered to stop, the male attempted to strike both officers with the vehicle as he fled the area. Both officers narrowly escaped serious injury.

The male drove west on 50th Avenue in Lacombe to Highway 2. He was traveling at a high rate of speed and was pursued south towards the City of Red Deer. The pursuit was turned over to Red Deer City RCMP.

The vehicle entered the city limits and the Police successfully utilized a Tire Deflation Device to demobilize the vehicle. The driver attempted to continue fleeing but eventually the vehicle came to a stop against a tree and ignited. The driver was arrested without incident and Red Deer Emergency Services was dispatched immediately to tend to the vehicle fire. The male driver was confirmed to be the same individual who assaulted the Red Deer City Traffic Enforcement Officer earlier in the day.

No one was injured as a result of these incidents.

Twenty two (22) year old, Weston Kleigh Pickford of Red Deer, Alberta had numerous outstanding warrants and has additionally been charged with the following Criminal Code Offences:

Sylvan Lake crime spree halted with arrests

On September 4th, 2013 at approximately 1:10 pm, Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint in the area of Range Road 31 and Rainy Creek Road. The caller reported seeing 2 suspicious males with a broken down orange Dodge Challenger. One of the males was observed breaking into a barn on an adjacent property and stealing a dirt bike. It was determined that the Challenger had been stolen from Blackfalds that morning and later involved in a Gas and Dash and Assault at the Sylvan Lake Esso.

Police arrived and took one male into custody at the car. A short time later, with the assistance of the Lacombe County Patrol and the Blackfalds RCMP, the 2nd male was arrested with the stolen dirt bike in the area of Aspelund Road and Range Road 283.

Arrested were Florian POITRA (31 years old) of Red Deer and Jesse BISSONNETTE (28 Years old) of Blackfalds.

The 2 have been jointly charged with Possession of Stolen Property over $5000, Theft under $5000, Break and Enter and Theft, and Failing to comply with several conditions of a Recognizance. In addition, POITRA was also charged with Possession of a Controlled substance (Heroin) and BISSONNETTE was charged with Assault.

Both remain in custody and POITRA has a Bail Hearing set for September 19th, 2013 and BISSONNETTE has a Bail Hearing set for September 13th, 2013.

Police also recovered a small amount of Jewelry believed to have possibly been stolen in a recent Break and Enter. If you suspect this Jewelry may be yours, please contact the Sylvan Lake RCMP at (403) 858-7200.

Blackfalds RCMP arrest suspects in unlocked vehicle thefts

On September 5, 2013 at approximately 2:25  a.m. an off duty RCMP member advised Blackfalds Detachment that a female was going into unlocked vehicles on Chinook Street in Blackfalds.  While awaiting the arrival of Blackfalds members the off duty member approached the female, who at this time was in a motor vehicle, and questioned her as to what she was doing.  The female then fled in the 2013 Dodge Avenger which police determined was stolen from a residence in Red Deer earlier that evening.  At 2:50 a.m. Blackfalds RCMP conducted a traffic stop on the 2013 Dodge Avenger with a 21 year old male driver and an 18 year old female passenger.  Both were arrested without incident.   The 2013 Dodge Avenger was returned to the owner and no items were stolen from the vehicles entered.  The male had outstanding Criminal Code warrants from Red Deer and will be charged with Possession of Stolen Property Over $5000, Possession of a Controlled Substance and 2 Breach of Probations.  The female will be charged with Possession of Stolen Property Over $5000, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Mischief and  Fail to Comply with Release Documents.  The identities of these adults will be released once the Criminal informations have been laid.

Blackfalds RCMP are reminding vehicle owners to lock their vehicles as the thefts from motor vehicles are crimes of opportunity and many can be prevented by locking your vehicles.


Update: Search for missing canoeist continues

The search for a 58 year-old missing canoeist remains on-going. Current search efforts continue with the assistance of Fort McMurray Search and Rescue, and RCMP Air Services. The missing man left on a boating trip with three others on June 8. During the week of June 23 to 30, extensive surface water searches of the Clearwater and Athabasca Rivers were conducted with the assistance from Fort McMurray Search and Rescue, RCMP Air Services, and the Search and Rescue Dog Association. Friends and family of the missing person, as well as local citizen also participated in the search efforts.

Additional resources that have been utilized over the last two months include Forestry and Fish and Wildlife Divisions as part of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, as well as Search and Rescue Dog Association. Friends and family of the missing person, as well as local citizen have also volunteered countless hours and resources to participate in the search efforts.

Recently the water levels have been significantly lower than earlier in the summer allowing for more focused search efforts. The RCMP continue to encourage users of the waterways to report any observations or information that may lead to the recovery of the missing male or the canoe he was said to be travelling in at the time of his disappearance.

ATV stolen near Cadomin

Sometime during the night of Saturday August 31st, 2103 an ATV was stolen from a campsite approximately 10 km east of Cadomin.  The ATV was outside and did not have keys in it.  The ATV is described as a yellow 2005 Honda Rubicon.

Fender bender in McLennan

On Thursday, September 5th, 2013 at 9:05 p.m. members of the McLennan RCMP Detachment were called to a two vehicle collision on 3rd Avenue NE in McLennan , Alberta.

Members of the McLennan RCMP Detachment along with Alberta Health Services EMS and Smoky River Fire Rescue attended the scene. As a result of further investigation it is believed that a 90 year old female from McLennan was eastbound on 3rd Avenue in a maroon Nissan car when she rear ended a parked turquoise Ford pick-up truck. The driver of the car appeared uninjured but as a precaution was transported to the Sacred Heart Medical Centre where she was examined and released.



The McLennan RCMP Detachment would like to thank the local citizens who witnessed the incident for calling 911, remaining at the scene, and providing assistance to the driver of the car.
