On August 28th, 2013, at approximately 6:10 p.m., the Airdrie RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision involving three vehicles at the intersection of Main Street and Erin Drive in the city of Airdrie, Alberta. Safety of Cyclists and Motorists During the Tour of Alberta
The Tour of Alberta is a professional level cycling event which will be held from September 3rd to 8th, 2013.
Starting on September 4th, the Tour will pass through various regions of the province. The event will cover an approximately 900 km route, and travel through 50 Alberta communities. More information on the Tour of Alberta can be found at www.tourofalberta.ca
Integrated Traffic Units (ITUs) and local RCMP Detachments will be working with race officials and local communities to ensure the safe and efficient movement of both cyclists and motorists as the Tour passes through rural Alberta.
The race route follows several primary and numerous secondary highways. While the race is in progress, sections of highway will be closed while the racing caravan passes.
Inspector Stephen Grant, with RCMP ‘K’ Division Traffic Services, explains:
“The race route was decided many months ago with the support and cooperation of the Government of Alberta. We regret any delays experienced by motorists and residents along the various race routes, but where possible, the RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs will direct vehicles onto alternate roadways to ensure the safe and expedient passage of traffic.”
Integrated Traffic Units have been tasked with providing a motorcycle and police-vehicle escort to the cyclists involved in the race in an effort to mitigate possible conflict between motorists and the event. In addition, ITU officers and RCMP Detachment members will be staffing vehicle checkpoints at several locations along the race route.
Preparation for the event has been on-going for several months, and has included liaising with other police agencies in order to determine and apply the best practices for providing safe traffic conditions for all participants and spectators.
ITU motorcycle and patrol officers involved directly in the race caravan have participated in a detailed training program, designed to prepare them for the demands of providing a safe and secure environment for all involved in this high profile cycling event.
Integrated Traffic Units consist of RCMP Traffic Services members and Sheriff Highway Patrol officers working together in a collaborative effort to deliver effective and efficient traffic safety services to Albertans, with a focus on identified enforcement priorities.
