Two St. Albert Boys In Hospital from Possible Drug Overdose

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on September 23, 2013, St. Albert RCMP received a report of a male youth found unconscious and having seizures in a back alley near Mount Royal Drive in St. Albert, Alberta.  EMS transported the 14 year old male resident of St. Albert to the Sturgeon Hospital where he was quickly transferred to STARS Air Ambulance and transported to the Children’s Stollery Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta.  He remains in an unconscious state.

A short time later a second report was received of another male youth in medical distress in a school parking lot near Montclare Place in St. Albert. This 16 year old male resident of St. Albert was also transported by land ambulance to the Children’s Stollery Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta.  He is conscious and in listed in stable condition.

It is believed that these two youth have overdosed on a synthetic cannabinoid drug commonly known as “K2” or “Spice”.

Health Canada issued a warning July 5, 2013 about “Spice” as it carries serious health risks and should not be purchase or consumed.  The health effects range from confusion and nausea, to seizures, psychotic episodes and in some cases, death.  There have also been some reports of users becoming addicted to some of these substances.

A criminal investigation is underway on this incident.  No charges have been laid on this matter as of yet.

False 911 Calls On Deactivated Phones Becoming a Nuisance

Grande Prairie RCMP are asking parents to be mindful of their children using their cellular devices, even if the device has been deactivated.

The RCMP have noticed a recent increase in false 911 calls from wireless devices that are no longer in service but still have the ability to make emergency calls via 911.  Yesterday alone, one child generated 44 false 911 calls to police.  This was a result of a deactivated phone being given to a child so it could be used as a stand alone device.

Parents must be aware that although cellular phones are no longer in service that if the phone has a battery and power is being supplied to the device that it is very easy for a 911 call to be made.  Subsequently, each 911 call results in a file being created and an investigation being conducted to ensure that there is no emergency and that no one is in distress.  Obviously, this takes resources away from other matters in our community.

The Grande Prairie RCMP are asking that if a deactivated or decommissioned phone is given to a child that they take the necessary steps to ensure that the child does not use the emergency contact button or is closely monitored to ensure that they are not using the phone application to inadvertently contact 911.
