Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision Near Spruceview, Alberta

At approximately 10:00 am on Friday, the 13th of September, 2013, Innisfail RCMP and the Spruceview Fire Department were called to the scene of a head on collision between a lone motorcycle driver and a Dodge dually truck pulling a camper.  The location was at Range Road 41 on Highway 54 west of Spruceview.  The collision occurred as the west bound Dodge truck pulled into the oncoming traffic lane, immediately in front of the east bound motorcycle driver.

There was no time to for the motorcycle driver to react.  The motorcycle driver, a Caucasian adult male, was deceased upon impact.  West bound traffic had been slowed down as a result of a farm implement being transported in that lane.  The camper and truck involved in the collision were in a line of several other vehicles and trailers that were reacting to the slower traffic in front of them.  At some point the driver in the truck proceeded into the oncoming lane trying to avoid the camper in front of him.

Charges have been laid against the male driver of the truck for Failing to Maintain Center of Lane.  Both the truck and motorcycle were destroyed in the collision.

A RCMP Collision analyst attended to the scene to assist with the police investigation and the investigation is continuing as the RCMP assists the Medical Examiners office out of Calgary.

Family of the deceased male have been advised but have requested that his identity be withheld at this time of grief.

Neither speed or alcohol are involved.

Motor vehicle collision/fire near involving sour gas tanker Innisfail results in charge and significant damage to bridge

At approximately 2 pm, Friday, September 13th, 2013, Innisfail RCMP were called to the scene of a two vehicle collision on Highway 590 just east of Hwy 805 in Red Deer County, East of Innisfail, Alberta.  A tanker truck owned by Gibson's Energy with a tanker trailer in tow, was East bound on Highway 590 when it lost control crossing the fog line and going into the ditch as it came up to a small bridge at that location.  In losing control the tanker trailer began to swing into oncoming traffic on the bridge.  The truck collided with the guard rail and abutment of the bridge and became engulfed in flames.  The tanker trailer swung into and collided with a minivan that was west bound pinning it in place.  No one was injured in the collision but a 90 year old male passenger in the minivan was transported to hospital for precautionary examination considering his age.

The adult male driver of the truck has been charged with failing to maintain the center of his lane.

The tanker truck was transporting sour gas and became completely engulfed in the fire.  It was completely destroyed and burned extensively for several hours.  Alberta transportation and Alberta Environment were called at the scene for assistance as well as Red Deer County Emergency Services.  No evacuations were necessary but personnel remained on scene to assessthe situation.  The bridge was damaged during the collision and subsequent fire, and Highway 590 will remain closed at the bridge for some time until it can be assessed for damage and safety.  It will most likely remain closed for some time and traffic is being diverted around in the interim.

The collision occurred in the northbound lanes of Highway 2, about 1 km south of the Yankee Valley Blvd overpass.

It appears at this time that a green 2000 Chevrolet S-10 truck was traveling northbound in the right hand lane and had slowed because of traffic congestion. The S-10 was then struck from behind by green 2002 Chevrolet Malibu.

The driver and lone occupant of the S-10, a 34-year old male from Calgary, was transported to hospital with undermined injuries.

The driver and lone occupant of the Malibu, a 19-year old male from Airdrie, was uninjured in the crash, and has subsequently been charged with Careless Driving under the Traffic Safety Act.

Northbound traffic in the area was reduced to 2 lanes while emergency crews completed their investigation and cleaned up the scene.

All northbound lanes are now fully reopened.
