Charges Laid in Cross-Border "Mystery Shopper" Fraud
The RCMP's Calgary Financial Integrity Team, with the assistance of the Alberta Partnership Against Cross Border Fraud, completed an investigation and laid fraud and forgery charges against two males and one female relating to the operation of a complex international mail fraud being perpetrated from the Calgary area on US victims.
The three accused used a "Mystery Shopper scam" to defraud numerous Americans. The "mystery shopper scam" occurs when victims agree to test the customer service of a retail outlet. In this case, the victims were sent a cheque in the mail, asked to cash the cheque, and withdraw the money, which they then wired back through a money transfer store to other countries, including Great Britain. Victims believed they were being paid to test the customer service of the money transfer store. Shortly after, the victims are advised by their bank that the cheque was forged and they are required to pay the money back.
Cheque writing software, printers, and cheque paper were used to make the forged cheques appear legitimate. The forgeries were not detected until they arrived at the clearing centre and attempts were made to withdraw the funds from the account listed on the cheque.
With the assistance of Canada Post and the US Postal Service, partners in the Alberta Partnership Against Cross Border Fraud, thousands of envelopes were identified by Canada Post, and prevented from being sent to other potential victims. The US Postal Service worked to identify US citizens who received letters. A total of 10 US victims were identified, with a total loss of more than $21000.
The quick identification of this scam by the Partnership likely prevented hundreds, if not thousands, of others from being victimized.
Daniel Tochukwu Ezeani, age 34 of Cochrane, AB has been charged with Fraud Through Mails and Use Counterfeit Stamp.
Emmanuel Davies Uzonwanne, 37, of Calgary, AB and Tina Marie Uzonwanne, age 41, also known as Tina Marie Trowbridge of Calgary, AB have been charged with Fraud Through Mails, Possess
Instrument for Forgery, Possess Counterfeit Stamp, and Possess Instrument to Make
