A motorist had been traveling northbound on Range Road 224 just south of Township Road 540 when they came upon another vehicle parked at an angle across the driving lanes of the highway. The motorist, a 51 year old male who was traveling alone at the time, stopped his vehicle to see if he could assist with what he thought might be a fellow motorist in need of help.
As he came to a stop at the location, an unknown male appeared from behind the parked vehicle brandishing a long barreled firearm and pointed it at the motorist. The male approached the motorist, who was still sitting in his vehicle, kicked the drivers side door and then proceeded to smash the door window with the butt end of the firearm.
Shortly after, a third vehicle was noticed approaching the location when the male with the firearm retreated to his vehicle and fled the area heading west on Township Road 540.
No shots were fired and no one was injured as a result of the incident.
The suspect is described as: Caucasian, approximately 35 - 40 years old, 5' 8" (68 cm) tall and 160 - 180 lbs (72 - 82 kg). He had short dark unkept hair, discolored teeth and wore large round eyeglasses and dark work type clothing, possibly coveralls.
The suspect vehicle is described as an older blue and white Chevrolet pick up truck. The vehicle was dirty with possible rust patches and was equipped with large knobby type tires. No licence plate number was obtained but possibly contains 7 digits and is registered in Alberta.

RCMP are investigating the death of a 35 year old female as a homicide and have charged a 33 year old male with second degree murder and possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order. The accused has been remanded into custody and will make his next court appearance on December 11, 2013 at 9:30 a.m.

Charity Check Stop checking for Okotoks Community Donors
The 7th Annual Charity Check Stop will be held on December 11, 2013, 2 pm to 4 pm on Milligan Drive at Okotoks Drive in Okotoks, Alberta Emergency Services personnel from the community, including Okotoks RCMP, Okotoks Municipal Enforcement, Okotoks Fire Department, Foothills Patrol and Foothills Victim Services will be involved in collecting food, unwrapped toys, and/or monetary donations from the motoring public.
100% of the proceeds of the Charity Check Stop are directed to the Okotoks Food Bank and Rowan House Emergency Shelter. Both of these local charities are very worthy recipients of the public's support. In 2012 the Check Stop raised almost $9000 as well as seven pickup trucks full of food donations. The challenge for this year is to surpass last year's level of donations.
All too often the Emergency Services workers have to deal with people in distress and in difficult situations. This Check Stop will give an opportunity for the public to meet Emergency Services personnel in a very positive setting, with everyone working towards helping those in need this holiday season.
Although this is a Charity Check Stop, it should be noted that offenders encountered during this event will be dealt with as prescribed by law. December is Impaired Driving month as part of the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan, and the focus of law enforcement is to eliminate all impaired drivers from the streets and highways of Alberta.
Along with the RCMP Safety Bear, Sparky the Fire Dog, and Rocky the Town of Okotoks mascot, there may even be a jolly old fellow in a red suit on hand to greet and thank the generous donors. All Emergency Services will have their respective emergency vehicles on hand for viewing and safety.
Alberta RCMP charge 35 Impaired Drivers in weekend CheckStop blitz
Edmonton, AB- Police stopped and checked 13, 929 vehicles during an Alberta-wide RCMP CheckStop blitz that took place over the weekend. The RCMP conducted 157 CheckStops in local communities and on major roadways on Saturday and into Sunday morning as part of a Canada-wide RCMP enforcement campaign aimed at taking impaired drivers off the roads. At some locations, Alberta Traffic Sheriffs and municipal police officers worked alongside the RCMP.
“The officers who worked the CheckStops in the brutal cold on Saturday night can take pride in knowing that their collective efforts took 70 impaired drivers off the roads,” said Superintendent Howard Eaton, Officer-in-Charge of “K” Division Traffic Services. “Last weekend was unique in terms of the number of RCMP officers deployed at one time, but we will be out again this weekend and every weekend until we win the battle against impaired driving.”
RCMP Red Deer City warns the public about “Emergency” scams
Red Deer City RCMP warn the public about telephone scams occurring in the Red Deer area. These “emergency” scams involve people phoning senior citizens and posing as a nephew, niece or grandchild who has encountered an emergency situation and needs cash wired to them quickly. The fraudulent callers typically claim that they were in a car accident, are having trouble returning from a foreign country, or that they were arrested by police and need money for bail.
RCMP report that the individual posing as a family member provides some details to their victims, in essence, “proving” that they are who they claim to be. In cases where the victim questions the caller because their voice is not familiar, callers may claim their voice is altered due to an injury suffered. There are a number of variations to this telephone scam; some involve providing detailed follow-up information from a second person posing as a lawyer.
Victims in Red Deer have been asked to wire money through Western Union or other money transfer companies. They are also asked not to tell others because the caller is afraid to get in trouble with their parents. While emergency scams have been around for a while, RCMP have seen an increase in the number of complaints in the past weeks. In some cases, people have been defrauded of thousands of dollars.
By arming yourself with knowledge, you can prevent yourself and your family from becoming victims of fraud. For further information on Frauds or Scams, refer to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca or the Competition Bureau’s Information Centre at www.competitionbureau.gc.ca
If you have been a victim of fraudulent activity or suspect a business, telemarketer or advertisement is fraudulent, report it to Red Deer City RCMP 403.343.5575 and to Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1.888.495.8501.
