Crowsnest Pass Enforcement Services/Fire/Rescue monthly synopsis for December 2013

Tips from Fire Chief Steve Munshaw:
  • If you use an alarm service, make sure they have the correct address for your business or residence on file. Moments count in an emergency. One recent call was to an address that included an extra digit. Determining the correct address then becomes a guessing game which can cost precious time.
  • Clean your chimney (or have it cleaned) twice a year, preferably at the beginning of the winter season and then once again halfway through.
CNP Fire/Rescue incident summary, December 2013

On December 2, 2013 at 8:10 am Crowsnest Pass Fire and Rescue assisted with a weather related road closure of Highway 3 in the Coleman area. 12 responders worked on a rotating schedule for almost 8 hours, helping with traffic control.

On December 7, 2013 2 members responded to a chimney fire in Hillcrest. Upon arriving at the scene it was discovered that the householders had dealt with the issue themselves.

On December 8, 2013 14 members assisted with a water line rupture at York Creek Lodge in Blairmore. The water line broke in the roof of the mechanical room, creating a pool of about 30 feet in circumference. Responders assisted with the cleanup and were on scene for 81 minutes. Water from that incident damaged the heat detector, which was discovered the next day. According to Fire Chief Steve Munshaw the ladies at the facility tried to reset the panel which was full of water, which in turn set off the alarm. A peace officer was coincidentally at the site, who happens to also be a firefighter, and he okayed the scene, allowing Fire and Rescue to stand down.

On December 9, 2013 14 responders attended a house in Hillcrest where the fire alarm was activated. Upon arriving they discovered smoke in the home, which turned out to be caused by a fireplace fire that went out and a closed flue, resulting in smoke.

On December 12, 2013 1 responder attended what turned out to be a false fire alarm in Bellevue.

On December 15, 2013 11 responders spent just over an hour assisting with a motor vehicle accident on Highway 3 near the lakes west of Coleman. A vehicle hit a deer, and three people were affected. However, no human injuries resulted. The vehicle had to be towed as it was damaged and leaking fluids. Fire and Rescue does not generally respond to such incidents, but at the time the call came in the information was scant.

On December 23, 2013 17 responders attended a chimney fire at a residence in Coleman. Upon arriving they discovered a red-hot chimney. After suppressing the fire, the householders were advised to clean the flue.
