Cranbrook Hornets sting Rockies for back-to-back wins

Frank McTighe, Macleod Gazette Editor

The Southwest Rockies came crashing down on the weekend during a road trip to Cranbrook.

After finishing 2013 with a win and a tie, the Rockies opened the new year with a pair of South Central Alberta Bantam AA Hockey League losses.

Cranbrook Hornets toppled the Rockies 8-6 on Saturday and 6-2 on Sunday.  The Rockies record fell to 4-17-2 which leaves them three points ahead of Badlands Longhorns in the race for the final playoff spot.

The Rockies are back in action at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 and 12 noon Sunday, Jan. 12 as they host Taber Golden Suns in back-to-back games at Crowsnest Pass.

Justin Garcia of the Hornets stung the Rockies for six goals Saturday as Cranbrook handed the visitors an 8-6 loss.  Garcia had shorthanded and powerplay goals in the first period as Cranbrook opened a 2-0 lead.  Michael McTighe scored his first of the game, unassisted, to pull the Rockies within one goal heading into the break.  Garcia completed his hat trick just 36 seconds after the puck was dropped to start the second period, and Cranbrook led 3-1.  Just 46 seconds later Rockies captain Turner Sharp, wearing Tim Horton’s old No. 2, set up Ethan Richards for a powerplay goal.  Garcia replied 95 seconds later and 3 1/2 minutes later Dalton Luce scored to put Cranbrook ahead 5-2.

In the last 10 minutes of the second period the Rockies showed some resiliency. First it was a pair of Fort Macleod Minor Hockey products combining for a goal when Jordy Welsh set up Jason Creighton. Just over a minute later Colton Meade and McTighe combined to set up Chase Snider to pull the Rockies to within one. With 1:30 left in the period McTighe tied the game with his second, assisted by Jesson Luco.
The Rockies got their first and only lead of the game 12 minutes into the third when McTighe completed his hat trick on an unassisted effort. Just nine seconds later Cranbrook tied the game on a goal by Caige Sterzer and Garcia added two more including one into the empty net, to make the final 8-6 for the Hornets.

Kyle Roberts made 22 saves in the Rockies goal while his teammates fired 35 shots at the Hornets net.

The outcome was never in doubt Sunday as the Hornets skated to a 6-2 win.
Cranbrook opened a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes and made it 3-0 in the second period.  K’s Thomson scored for the Rockies to make it 3-1, but Cranbrook replied to restore its two-goal lead.  Jordy Welsh scored his second of the season on a nifty toe drag move to make it 4-2, but that was as close as the Rockies would get.

Cranbrook scored two more goals to make the final 6-2.
