Police team up to arrest fugitive for 2013 homicide
On March 13, more than a year after 25 year old Lloyd Sarson was murdered in Red Deer, Alberta, a team of police agencies across Alberta and BC have arrested the 18 year old fugitive wanted for the crime. Sarson was found deceased in a vehicle in a Red Deer alley in the early morning hours of January 1, 2013; he had been shot in what police believed to be a targeted attack.
Within a week of the homicide RCMP issued a Canada-wide warrant for a suspect, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because he was a minor at the time of the offence. Police intelligence indicated the suspect, who was believed to be associated with an organized crime group with ties in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and British Columbia, may have fled to BC. RCMP continued to actively search for the suspect, offering a cash reward on the anniversary of Sarson’s murder for information leading to the capture of the fugitive.
On March 13, 2014, assistance from the public led RCMP to a Vancouver apartment and the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC (CFSEU-BC) were contacted. CFSEU-BC, with the VPD's assistance, dedicated significant resources and were able to locate the fugitive after several days and he was arrested for the First Degree Murder of Lloyd Sarson. A second 18 year old male fugitive wanted for the Second Degree Murder of Nigel Dixon, committed on April 4, 2013 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was also arrested at the same time in the same apartment. This suspect also cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because he was a minor at the time of the offence.
The successful arrests were the result of coordinated intelligence and exceptional tactical work by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC, Calgary RCMP Major Crimes Unit, Vancouver Police Department Emergency Response Team and RCMP Emergency Response Team.
The arrests occurred without incident; both accused have been transported back to the province where the offences occurred by the respective investigative police agencies.
The suspect in the Lloyd Sarson muder case was originally scheduled to make his first court appearance on March 19, 2014 at 1:30 pm in Alberta Provincial Court in Red Deer. However, his case was brought forward and the suspect appeared via Closed Circuit TV at approximately 10 am this morning. The suspect has been remanded in custody and will make his next court appearance on March 25, 2014 at 9:30 am in Alberta Provincial Court in Red Deer.
