Weather, road conditions factor in multi-vehicle collisions

Southern Alberta - Alberta RCMP and Alberta Traffic Sheriffs continue to investigate a series of collisions that took place at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014. Approximately 30 vehicles were involved in a series of collisions in the southbound lanes of the QE II Highway between Didsbury and Carstairs. There has been one fatality and at least four people were injured. A collision analyst is on scene assisting with the investigation and southbound lanes remain closed at this time. Road and weather condition were poor at the time of the collisions.
"Conditions like these can make travel very dangerous," says Inspector Stephen Grant, Officer-in-Charge of Traffic Operations, Alberta RCMP, "We encourage you to use 511 and check road conditions before you travel."
Weather and road conditions were also a factor in a multiple vehicle collision near Banff on Highway 1 involving a semi-trailer and at least three passenger vehicles. Four people have been transported to hospital.
Armed robbery near Red Deer
Investigation into this matter has identified one of two suspects. On March 5th 2014, Alexander TAYLOR, age 29 of the Red Deer area has been charged with several offences, including Theft while armed with an offensive weapon, Break & Enter and Theft to a dwelling house, carrying a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence, and four counts of Mischief.
TAYLOR was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on March 11th 2014.
This Investigation is still ongoing as RCMP are still looking for the second suspect.
On March 4, 2014 at approximately 8:00 pm Cold Lake RCMP officer were dispatched to a call where a male had been shot in the lower leg and stabbed in his torso. This incident occurred in a rural location north of the City of Cold Lake which may be related to an alleged altercation earlier in the Walmart parking lot in Cold Lake. The victim, a 24-year-old male from St. Albert, Alberta was treated at the local Health Centre before being transported to an hospital in Edmonton for further treatment. His injuries are serious but non life threatening.
Investigation suggests, that this incident is not a random act and it is believed that the victim and assailant(s)s may know each other.
Cold Lake RCMP are seeking the public's assistance in identifying those responsible for the incident at the rural residence as well as the altercation at the Walmart parking lot or, any other information that could would further advance this investigation.
On March 5, 2014, Maskwacis RCMP, with the assistance of the RCMP Major Crimes Unit, charged Tyrus Brent WHITE a 31-year-old man of Samson Cree Nation, with Second Degree Murder in the death of 52-year-old Dale Selmer CHRISTENSEN, from Wetaskiwin, Alberta.
Dale CHRISTENSEN, a Wetaskiwin taxi cab driver, received fatal stab injuries after picking up a fare on the Samson Cree Nation late on the night of March 3, 2014.
An autopsy for CHRISTENSEN was conducted yesterday morning confirming his identity, and the manner of death was determined to be homicide.
Tyrus WHITE was remanded to appear in Wetaskiwin Provincial court today. RCMP investigation suggests that this homicide is not gang related.
The investigation into this incident remains ongoing, and the RCMP asks that if anyone has information regarding this homicide is asked to call Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or the Maskwacis RCMP Detachment at 780-585-3767.
In the afternoon of Tuesday March 4, 2014 Vegreville RCMP were called to a residence on 51 avenue in Mundare, Alberta for a report of two masked men entering the home and demanding money. The homeowner, a 78 year old man, was home alone at the time that the suspects came to the door and knocked. The victim answered the door and the two males forced their way past him. Once inside they demanded money and were told there wasn't any to give. They then began to rummage through the home but left empty-handed shortly after entering.
The suspects are described as skinny males in dark clothing, wearing hoods and masks over their faces. The taller of the pair is believed to be approximately 5'10" and was wearing a green, red and white mask over his face. The other was shorter at approximately 5'8" and was also wearing a mask. No weapons were seen or used, but the victim was pushed to the floor when he tried to push the suspects out of the house.
RCMP urge all citizens to keep personal safety and security their top priority. Keep the doors to your home locked at all times, and look out a window before opening your door.

Vandalism to new Airdrie school
Airdrie, Alberta - On February 22nd 2014, Airdrie RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of mischief at the new school being built on Chinook Winds Drive, W. H. Croxford. Approximately 40 windows were damaged putting the total damage estimate at $60,000. The windows were reportedly shot with a BB gun.
Though it is unknown what time the incident occurred, police were called out across the street shortly before 2 a.m. where a large piece of machinery was set on fire. Both incidents are likely related.

On March 5, 2014 at approximately 4:25 am, Viking RCMP officers responded to a report of a CN train derailment which occurred in Beaver County, Alberta between range road 110 and range road 111 on the rail adjacent to highway 14.
Officers have confirmed that two empty grain cars sustained damage as a result of coming off the track. No one has been injured and CN crews attended the scene and the cleanup is underway.
Criminal activity is not suspected and CN Police are on scene investigating the incident.
There was no crossing in the area, therefore flow of traffic was not affected.
During the arrest of a Red Deer man in late January on an unrelated matter, Red Deer RCMP discovered that the suspect was also in possession of a variety of stolen items, including identification, credit cards, fuel cards and uncashed cheques. Most of these items had been reported stolen from personal and corporate vehicles between December 2013 and mid-January 2014.
36 year old Robin James Gilroy of Red Deer has been charged with:
- Criminal Code 56.1(3) – Possession of Identification x 11
- Criminal Code 355(b) – Possession of Stolen Property x 22
RCMP would like to remind people to remove all valuables from vehicles and to lock their vehicles.
Shortly after 6:00 am on Wednesday March 5, 2014 Vegreville RCMP were called to Mundare, Alberta by a resident who nearly had his truck stolen. The vehicle owner left his truck unlocked and running while he went back in his house near 52 avenue and 52 street to grab his cigarettes. When he came back out he could hear his truck revving loudly, tires spinning and gears shifting but the truck only moving a few feet. The owner approached the truck to see a 17 year old male from Mundare attempting to drive the truck. The youth appeared to be high on drugs and unable to operate the truck properly. As the owner tried to pull the youth out of the truck the youth yelled to let go or he would stab the owner. The owner pulled the youth out who walked away from the scene.
Moments later a second call was received from a 74 year old female living near 53 avenue and 52 street in Mundare who stated she woke up to see a male rummaging through the items in her house. When she screamed, the suspect grabbed the victim's cellphone and purse and ran out of the home.
Police Dog Services was called in to assist in the search for the suspect while other officers patrolled the area. A male matching the description given in the attempted robbery of the truck was seen walking westbound on 53 avenue and when officers approached him, he ran. The suspect ran south through numerous yards to try and evade police but was caught by the two officers who outran him on 51 avenue. The 17 year-old male was identified and confirmed to be the suspect in the earlier attempted robbery of the truck. A search of the male's pockets upon arrest revealed property taken from the elderly lady's home, a knife, a small amount of methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia. The youth admitted to using methamphetamine only two hours earlier that morning and was displaying symptoms of drug impairment.
At the time of his arrest the youth had 3 different outstanding arrest warrants for other break and enters as well as vehicle thefts in the Mundare area. The youth was also on probation for a previous break and enter and possessing stolen property in Camrose, Alberta in 2012. The youth was known by both Victims.
An attempted robbery from an elderly male in his house occurred the previous afternoon in Mundare, but it is unknown at this time if this youth had involvement in that matter. That Robbery is still under investigation.
The youth remains in custody and is facing 23 charges. He makes his first appearance in Vegreville Youth Court later in March 2014. The accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
RCMP urge all citizens to keep personal safety and security their top priority. This matter shows that drugs and crime is present, even in small town Alberta. Do not leave your vehicle or home unlocked, even if its just for a moment.
During the month of January, 2014 Strathmore RCMP received two complaints of sexually explicit messages being sent among elementary students on social media sites. Strathmore RCMP with the assistance of RCMP Internet Child Exploitation Unit have investigated these complaints and found them to be computer generated messages that have the ability to collect and forward the users responses to these messages. The RCMP Internet Child Exploitation Unit is continuing to investigate.
Strathmore RCMP is reminding the public not to respond to these types of messages and refrain from posting or sending any personal information online. In general, these types of computer generated messages will not continue if the user does not respond. We encourage parents to monitor their children's social media accounts.
On March 3, 2014, RCMP in Red Deer, Alberta, investigated an allegation of an adult male providing safety training and certificates without authorization to do so. Investigation revealed the male, working in association with an Alberta company, was in fact fraudulently delivering workplace safety training such as H2S Alive! and OSSA Fall Safety.
As a result of the investigation, police have arrested and charged 22 year old Chance Aaron Shaw of Red Deer with:
- Criminal Code 380 (1)(b) – Fraud not exceeding $5000
- Criminal Code 368(1) – Use of a Forged Document
- Criminal Code 367 – Forgery
- Criminal Code 380(1)(a) – Fraud exceeding $5000
Chance Aaron Shaw will appear in Alberta Provincial Court in Red Deer at 9:30 am on March 14, 2014.
Red Deer City RCMP are cautioning the public about conducting transactions or receiving training through Vertical Limits Scaffolding Ltd., found on the internet at verticallimit.ca. In any business transaction, a consultation with the Better Business Bureau can avoid loss and hardship.

Motor vehicle accident near High River sends one to hospital via STARS
At approximately 07:30 on March 6, 2014, High River RCMP attended the scene of a motor vehicle accident on Highway 2A. A lone male was extricated from one of the vehicles and transported by STARS Air Ambulance to a Calgary Hospital with undetermined injuries.
The driver of the second vehicle was not injured.
An RCMP Collision Analyst is on scene and Police continue to investigate.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
Sundre, Alberta - On Friday, February 28, 2014 the Sundre RCMP Detachment received a complaint regarding the suspicious death of a feral horse, the remains of which were located near a lease road just north of Highway 584 in Clearwater County, Alberta.
The Sundre RCMP, with assistance from Sundre Alberta Fish and Wildlife Officer, attended the scene to investigate. The preliminary investigation revealed that the horse may have been shot.
The remains of the horse were seized and the police investigation is continuing pending the results of a necropsy.
The Sundre RCMP would like to remind the public that feral horses are considered livestock and as such are protected under Section 444 of the Criminal Code. The Sundre RCMP are requesting any persons with information in relation to this occurrence to contact the Sundre RCMP Detachment at (403) 638-3675 or Crime stoppers.
