Officers in School Zones
Don't be surprised to see RCMP officers at your child's school during morning drop off and afternoon pick up times. Officers have been dropping by local schools to ensure that children are able to get to their schools safely. While the school crossing guards work diligently at the crosswalk areas, RCMP officers have been reminding parents how to navigate the student drop off zones properly and officers have been keeping the school bus lanes free of parked vehicles so buses can drop off students safely.
One of the biggest concerns around schools in the morning and afternoon is the dramatic increase in vehicles coming to pick up their children. Unfortunately not all drivers obey the law as schools regularly see vehicles double and sometimes triple parked causing traffic to be blocked completely and school bus lanes filled with illegally parked cars. This causes school buses to park at angles with parts of the buses sticking out into the travel lane of the roads which is very dangerous for the children.
The RCMP remind all drivers that it is not okay to break the parking laws, - even though "it is just for a minute". We are all role models to these young students who will be future drivers. Following the laws and ensuring a safe school zones for all students is important to teach to our children.

“Traffic enforcement officers play a key role in making our communities safe. Not only are the roads and highways safe through traffic safety programs, but they also play a significant role in harm reduction by taking harmful and dangerous substances as illustrated, out of the hands of the criminal element. A case in point, the seizure of the GHB (Date rape drug) has taken a very large number of doses of the harmful substance that has a devastating effect on unsuspecting victims". Said RCMP Superintendent Howard EATON – Officer in Charge of RCMP K Division Traffic Services.
