Update:
The 16 year old youth has been released from the Stollery Hospital and has returned home.
The 14 year old youth remains in the Children's Stollery Hospital in Edmonton and as of noon today, September 24, 2013, was still in ICU. He is now breathing on his own and has regained consciousness. No further updates on his condition are known.
The initial information that the drug that caused the medical distress in the youth was K2 or Spice may be incorrect. The 16 year old youth has stated that he was with the 14 year old youth and they ingested the drug together. He stated that after smoking the drug, they had medical issues within one minute. This same youth is now stating that they were not actually sure what drug they took. They were told it was a chemical synthetic and that it was safe.
From the medical emergency that quickly occurred to both youth after they ingested this drug, it is clear that this drug is very dangerous.
St. Albert RCMP are warning the region that there could be more of this drug in the community and therefore, families need to talk about the dangers of drugs and encourage all family members to make healthy choices. Even if someone says a substance is safe, families should expect that their loved ones refuse to take foreign substances into their bodies.
The RCMP investigation into this matter is ongoing and may take some time to come to conclusions about what this drug is or how it came into this community. St. Albert RCMP will provide a further update if any new information develops. Otherwise, no updates will be issued.
