Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision on Highway 599

On Friday, September 27, 2013 at 10:08 pm, Coronation and Consort RCMP, Castor Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to a collision on 599 Hwy, east of Castor. A van with one occupant struck a truck hauling farm equipment that was pulled over yet partially on the roadway. The farm equipment was marked with an amber emergency flashing light as well as an emergency triangle. The occupant of the van was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the truck was not injured. While the cause of the collision is not known, it has been determined that speed was a contributing factor. Alcohol is not thought to be a factor and the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Grass Fire Near Coalhurst

On September 29th, 2013, at 3:07 p.m.,. Lethbridge RCMP were dispatched to assist the Coalhurst Fire Department in dealing with a large grass fire which was burning just North of the Town of Coalhurst. Thanks to the quick action and assistance from local area farmers, the Coalhurst Fire Department, the Nobleford Fire Department, the Picture Butte Fire Department, and Picture Butte EMS the fire was quickly brought under control, and was extinguished shortly thereafter. Foul play was not a factor in this incident, and the fire was believed to have been caused by farm equipment which was operating in the area.

Fatal Motorcycle Crash north of Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake RCMP along with the Bentley Fire Department and Associated EMS attended the scene of a single vehicle motorcycle crash on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 6:15pm. The collision occurred approximately 1 kilometer west of Highway 20 on the Rainy Creek Road north of Sylvan Lake.
The motorcyclist was riding in a group of bikes west bound on Rainy Creek Road when it appears he failed to negotiate a curve in the road and left the road and struck a fence. No other vehicles were involved in this collision.
The driver, 62 year old Lloyd SPITTAL of Eckville, Alberta was transported to Red Deer Regional Hospital but died a short time later.
No charges are pending.

Watercraft Collision on the Athabasca River results in fatality
On September 28, shortly before 9:00 PM, the Wood Buffalo RCMP were dispatched to the scene of a watercraft collision on the Athabasca River approximately 140 kilometers north of Fort McMurray. The preliminary stages of the investigation revealed that a boat carrying two occupants collided with a sandbar in the river, causing one of the occupants to be ejected from the watercraft. One male (45) is confirmed deceased, while another male (59) sustained undisclosed injuries. Both victims have been known to reside in Fort McMurray.
Regional Emergency Services as well as Search and Rescue were also involved, however given the remote location and limited ground access to the area several aircraft, including military and RCMP helicopters have been deployed to assist with the rescue and recovery. At this time the survivor has been transported to the hospital in Fort McMurray with non-life-threatening injuries, while the recovery of the other victim is still underway. The next of kin have been notified; however out of respect for the families further victim information will not be released.
The investigation remains on-going at this time, however alcohol does not appear to be a factor and foul play is not suspected at this time. Further information will be released as it becomes available.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in Okotoks
On September 28, 2013 at 3:45 pm, Okotoks RCMP, Okotoks Fire Dept, and EMS were dispatched to an injury collision on Hwy 7 at 5th Street West (commonly known as Sundance Trail).
A Ford pickup was eastbound on Hwy 7 when a Volvo car pulled out from 5th Street to turn westbound onto Hwy 7.  The Ford was unable to stop in time and collided with the Volvo. The 88 year old male driver of the Volvo was ejected from the vehicle upon impact.
Both the driver and passenger of the Volvo were transported to hospital.  The driver later died as a result of his injuries.  The 67 year old passenger remains in hospital in stable condition.
The driver of the Ford truck was uninjured.
Speed and alcohol were not factors in this collision.
