Dangerous Driver and Stolen Vehicle Apprehended with Assistance of Calgary Police Helicopter

On Friday, September 27, 2013 at 1:15 PM, members of the Airdrie RCMP were advised a stolen vehicle was leaving the city of Calgary on Highway 2 northbound, traveling towards Airdrie.

The suspect vehicle, a silver Ford F-350, was believed to have been involved in numerous criminal offences in the City of Calgary and was being followed by the HAWCS helicopter.

A number of available RCMP personnel - including a police service dog – were dispatched to the area.  Ground units remained out of sight of the suspect vehicle, allowing the HAWCS helicopter to covertly follow the stolen truck.

As the F-350 continued to travel northbound on the QEII through the Olds area, RCMP were able to successfully deploy a spike belt.  Despite the loss of both front tires the suspect vehicle continued north bound on the QEII.

Near the City of Red Deer the vehicle became inoperable and the female driver and male passenger attempted to flee on foot.  The RCMP police service dog apprehended the female driver as she was about to run into oncoming traffic, preventing her from being struck.

The driver a 28 year old female and the 28 year old male passenger, both from Calgary, are now in RCMP custody in relation to offences occurring in RCMP jurisdiction and numerous outstanding warrants.

The investigation into the offences that occurred in the City of Calgary is continuing by the Calgary Police Service.

3 vehicle MVC in Lloydminster results in injuries, impaired driving charge

In the mid morning hours of September 27, 2013 Lloydminster RCMP responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision in the 3700 Block of 47 Avenue in Lloydminster. Initial reports were that a vehicle had rolled over in front of an elementary school. The investigation revealed that an SUV had been traveling north on 47 Avenue and struck a parked vehicle, overturned and came to rest against a parked school bus. Both stationary vehicles were found to be legally parked and unoccupied at the time of the collision.

The lone occupant of the SUV was assisted from the vehicle and treated by EMS on scene and released. Weather, road conditions and alcohol were not factors in this collision. Speed and distracted driving were the cause of this collision. The driver, a 24 year old male from Wainwright has been charged with driving without due care and attention under the Traffic Safety Act.

Police would like to take this opportunity to remind drivers that the rules of the road and associated regulations are in place for everyone's safety. Collisions of this nature are 100% avoidable and could have had a tragic outcome given the time of day and location.
