Air Cadets on hike in Crowsnest Pass |
Air Cadets from Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek enjoyed a hike along the Crowsnest Community Trails on Saturday, October 19th. Most of the day was taken up by hiking, but training also focused on how to use a topographical map with a compass, and GPS features. At mid-day the cadets stopped for lunch, during which many of the cadets got their first taste of MRE rations (“meals ready
to eat”). Although the thought of boil-in-the-bag rations was unusual to some, these meals have improved in taste over the years and everyone was pleased with what they ate – even the vacuum-packed bread!
After learning how GPS units use signals from satellites, the cadets were treated to a message from Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield. It was previously taped when he served as the Commander of the International Space Station and was directed at all air cadets in Canada. Hadfield described his introduction to flying as an air cadet and his approach to learning that ultimately resulted in his command of the space station.
Royal Canadian Air Cadet training focuses on citizenship, leadership, fitness and aviation. 859 Crowsnest Squadron trains every Monday night at the Elks Hall in Blairmore from 6:30 PM to 9:15 PM, September through June for youth aged 12–18 years old. New recruits are always welcome. There is no cost to join and uniforms are provided free of charge.
