Foster parents are key members of a team dedicated to helping children, youth and families. They receive training, financial compensation and support to mentor and support birth parents, help children achieve success in school and work with youth as they transition to independence.
“Ensuring children have the right start is crucial to their future success and quality of life. Foster families play such an important role in providing that right start. Each and every day, foster parents demonstrate dedication, generosity, patience, compassion and strength so children have an opportunity for success.”- Dave Hancock, Minister of Human Services
In Alberta, foster parents care for approximately 4,300 children and youth and recruitment of new foster parents and other caregivers is ongoing. By increasing the number of foster homes, more children can be matched with families in their home communities where siblings can stay together and maintain important cultural ties.
Anyone who is interested in or has questions about becoming a foster parent should contact their local Child and Family Services Authority or Delegated First Nations Agency.
