The year 2013 is now almost at a conclusion and I would firstly like to take this opportunity to wish all the residents of Southern Alberta a very wonderful Christmas and the very best for the New Year of 2014.
2013 will forever be remembered as a year of disaster for Southern Albertans. Lives were forever changed by the floodwaters that ravaged so many communities and even now at the end of the year, so many of them have still not yet recovered. Each day as I drive by the temporary shelter community of Saddlebrook near Aldersyde, I am overcome by sadness when I am reminded of how so many have not yet been able to return back to their homes and normal lives. My heart goes out to each and every one of them.
Like most Albertans, I pitched in as frequently as I could in High River cleaning out basements and travelled to view devastated areas with emergency personnel in Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Millarville, Fort Macleod, Blairmore and the MD of Foothills. I dropped in to visit the Evacuation Center in Nanton on several occasions to communicate with the poor souls who had to take shelter there and communicate with the wonderful team of volunteers. I have never been so proud of the dedication and efforts of all the Emergency Responders and volunteers that proved once again, that Albertans can be depended upon to pitch in with a will so strong when even the worst disaster in Canadian history befell them. To all of them, I say thank you.
As an MLA, it is my honor and privilege to serve and represent The Livingstone Macleod constituency, which is one of the largest provincial ridings and is comprised of some of the most beautiful scenery in Alberta. Throughout 2013, beyond the sessional duties in the Legislature, I continued with my work visiting the over twenty communities in the riding on a regular basis. From the business meetings with Councils for towns and rural municipalities, school boards, seniors’ centers, to celebrations, where I participated in parades, school visits, graduations and chamber events, I worked with and listened to some wonderful folks that are proud of their communities. In addition, I was privileged to attend the memorial for the Frank Slide, plus the services to honor our past Premiers, Peter Lougheed and Ralph Klein; both men having passed on to a better place this year.
With 2014 soon approaching, I look forward to continuing with serving the good folks of Southern Alberta. There is much to do and new folks to meet, especially considering the new Councillors and Trustees recently elected in October.
