Wood Buffalo RCMP investigate Hit and Run

Wood Buffalo RCMP responded earlier today to a scene on Highway 63 north of Fort McMurray near Suncor investigating what appears to be a hit and run fatality involving a vehicle and pedestrian. Police received the call at approximately 1:25 a.m.

Wood Buffalo RCMP is advising Highway 63 has re-opened and the scene examination has been completed by a RCMP Traffic Analyst. Police also report receiving a tip which lead them to seizing a pick-up truck in the Fort McMurray area and a person of interest is being interview by police at this time. Investigators are still trying to determine the identity of the deceased man in order to complete a notification of kin.

The investigation continues and further information will be released as it becomes available.

Update on October 9, 2013 St. Albert fatal collision

At approximately 4:00 p.m., on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, St. Albert RCMP received a complaint of a collision at Hebert Drive and Akins Drive in St. Albert, Alberta. The RCMP preliminary investigation at that time indicated that a road resurfacing crew was working at this intersection. Some crew members were moving some equipment and vehicles to different locations.

One crew member, a 25 year old male resident of Edmonton, AB was struck by another crew member moving a Chevrolet pickup truck. EMS was called and emergency first aid was given to the injured crew member until EMS arrived.

The injured man was transported to Sturgeon hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4:50 p.m. on October 9, 2013.

St Albert RCMP had forwarded all evidence gathered from this Collision investigation to the Crown Prosecutor's office to determine if the evidence supported the laying of any charges in this fatal collision. After a thorough review, the Office of the Crown Prosecutor has recommended that no charges be pursued in this tragic incident.

The next of kin of the deceased man have been notified but the name of the deceased is not being released by the RCMP in consideration of the family's wishes.

Road, weather, speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in this collision.

Dangerous thin ice

St. Albert RCMP have received 2 reports recently of people walking on dangerously thin ice and would like to warn the community that ice on any ponds, creeks or the Sturgeon River at this time of year is not safe. With the wide range of temperatures that we have experienced lately, ice is thinning and can easily break through. One report involved 3 children playing on ice, so the RCMP are asking that parents warn their children to stay off any ice now.

In both reports that the RCMP received, officers were unable to locate the people that had been on the ice so they were unable to personally warn those people.

Cops chasing cops...the results

Hard work pays off. More than fifty runners and volunteers from “K” Division attended the Baker to Vegas Law Enforcement Challenge Cup relay from March 22-23, 2014. Alberta’s provincial police force represented two of only three Canadian teams who travelled to the U.S. to participate in a 120-mile gruelling race through Death Valley from Baker, California to Las Vegas, Nevada.

The open team placed 35th in their category, and 195th overall, improving their time by 50 minutes from 2013 and running two hours faster than in 2012. The women’s team placed ninth in their category, finishing in 19:52. They also showed significant improvement, shaving 88 minutes off their time since 2012.

The relay is the largest law enforcement event of its kind in the world, celebrating teamwork, camaraderie, physical fitness and competition. Though American law enforcement agencies comprise the bulk of the racers (257 teams from 145 different law enforcement agencies), teams come from all over the world to challenge each other.

“The biggest highlight of participating has to be the ésprit de corps,” says Cst. Heidi Ravenhill of the Historical Homicide Unit, who has participated in the race for six years. “This year we raised $2,500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society of Alberta in memory of Ret. Supt. Ed Spaans, who passed away in 2012.”

"The challenging physical conditions and complex logistical elements of the race bring out the very best in our members," says Cpl. D'Arcy Swabey, captain of the open team. "Our American counterparts shake their heads when we tell them that three weeks prior to this event, most of our runners were training in -40 C temperatures in order to complete their hill programs."

RCMP members and volunteers come from Edmonton, Strathcona County, Lloydminster, Wood Buffalo, Grande Prairie, Calgary, and Slave Lake.

Man faces multiple theft and driving charges

The Dangerous Driving and Flight from Police charges stem from an incident on March 25, 2014 where BISSONETTE was operating the stolen Pontiac Grand Am on highway 2 south of Red Deer and passed a RCMP vehicle at a high rate of speed. When the RCMP vehicle initiated its emergency lights the Grand Am fled and eventually ended up on a dead end road south east of Red Deer. Inside the home police recovered more than 40 pieces of jewelry including rings, necklaces, watches, bracelets and diamonds. Multiple collisions on QEII

The poor weather and driving conditions on Highway #2 North of the City of Calgary led to a busy morning March 27 for officers in the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit, responding to 5 collisions on the QEII between 7:00 am and 9:00 am, including a multi vehicle collision near the Highway 72 overpass near Crossfield, Alberta.

Shortly before 9:00 am, a semi tractor unit without a trailer was southbound on Highway #2 when the driver lost control, entering the center median and making contact with the cable barrier. The semi crossed into the north bound lanes before the cable barrier was able to redirect the out of control semi truck back into the center median. At the same time, the driver of a northbound Honda CRV, took evasive actions in an attempt to avoid the semi. The cable barrier, together with the quick reactions of the northbound driver, prevented a head on collision.

Minutes later, a second semi tractor unit, pulling an empty 53 foot box trailer, was also southbound on Highway #2 and lost control, crossing over the newly damaged cable barrier. Two other vehicles were northbound at that time, having just driven past the first collision, both of these drivers were able to react quickly to also avoid head on collisions with the second out of control semi tractor unit. One vehicle entered the ditch and the second vehicle swerved, however, still made minor contact with the semi tractor unit.

Miraculously, there were no injuries at either scene. The photos above shows the cable barrier wrapped around the driver's side of the first semi tractor unit. The semi's tire marks are visible, showing how the semi tractor unit was pulled back into the center median by the cable barrier, preventing a head on collision.

Traffic was reduced to one lane north bound for an hour and a half while emergency services investigated and cleaned up the scene. The road and weather conditions remain poor in the area.

Having just cleared the scene, officers were returning to Airdrie, when a smaller compact car was observed traveling northbound on Highway #2 at an extremely high rate of speed, just South of where the collisions had just been cleaned up. An alleged speed reading was obtained on radar of 151km/h in the posted maximum 110km/h zone. The speeding car had to slow down due to the traffic back log and an officer was able to stop the car at the Highway 72 overpass. The driver, a 68 year old male from Calgary, has been issued violation tickets for speeding and careless driving.

A Medicine Hat Police Service officer was engaged in an investigation into a report of a missing person when the police officer drove into the driveway of the rural residence. The police officer was confronted by a male who exited the residence and pointed a firearm at the police officer.

The police officer retreated into his vehicle and immediately notified the RCMP. Additional members of the Medicine Hat Police Service attended to contain the area. One shot was fired by a Medicine Hat Police Service officer, who was aware of all of the previous details of this incident. The male died as a result of the injuries he sustained in this officer-involved shooting. The firearm that the deceased male had in his possession was recovered at the scene.

ASIRT is conducting an investigation into the actions of one Medicine Hat Police Service officer.

Arising out of the same set of circumstances, the RCMP is conducting a homicide investigation involving an individual or individuals associated to this incident.

RCMP warn people not to expose themselves to online fraud

Since July of 2013, Red Deer RCMP have received five complaints of Extortion by Libel from victims within the city. These situations generally involve males being approached online by females who lure them into compromising online encounters. The female suspects then approach their victims again, claiming to have recorded the encounter and threatening to post it online unless they are paid by their victims.
“It’s difficult to lay charges in cases like this, because these online profiles are fake and often they live in different countries,” says Corporal Sarah Knelsen with Red Deer RCMP. “Our advice, always, is to use the privacy settings on social media accounts, to be very cautious about whom you befriend online, and to not let anyone – friends or strangers – talk you into doing anything that you wouldn’t want your family, your employer or your friends to see.”
RCMP say instances of people being talked into taking and sharing compromising photos and videos of themselves are on the rise. “People feel safe using apps such as SnapChat, where they believe their photos are disappearing within seconds,” says Knelsen. “In reality, every time a new technology or a new update on existing technology comes along, it is followed by work-arounds by those who want to abuse it.”
RCMP suspect there may be even more instances of this type of extortion, but that victims may be too embarrassed to report it. These are relatively new issues, brought on by the popularity of social media, and its ensuing misuse by predators. Before July 2013, there were no reported cases of Extortion by Libel in Red Deer.
“Social media has so many great benefits but, as police, we see so many examples of the dark side of it,” says Knelsen. “People need to be aware of two vital things: your online actions do not disappear, and the online world is rife with predators.”
March is Fraud Prevention Month and Red Deer City RCMP would like to remind the public that, as predators continue to find creative ways to victimize trusting people, increased vigilance is necessary. The best protection is to learn how to recognize dangerous situations and fraud and protect yourself and the vulnerable people in your life from them: www.antifraudcentre.ca.
