Police are investigating a shooting that occurred early morning April 8 at a Grande Prairie residence. At 3:45 am April 8 Grande Prairie RCMP responded to a complaint of gunshots at a residence in the area of 92nd Street and 93rd Avenue. When police arrived they observed evidence of gunfire in the front door. Police cleared the home but did not find any occupants.
The police investigation thus far indicates that the incident involved an exchange of gunfire between at least two individuals. There was a trail of blood from the residence to a parking lot which led police to believe that someone was seriously injured during the incident.
Police have located the occupant of the home after he checked himself into the emergency room of a local area hospital with a gunshot wound. Yesterday evening at approximately 5 p.m. police were called to the hospital after a 24 year old male came to the emergency room suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The male remains in hospital awaiting surgery. Police have interviewed the male but he is not being cooperative with investigators.
Based on the investigative findings thus far, it is believed that a number of stray rounds from the exchange of gun fire hit other residences that were in close proximity to the residence where the incident occurred. The residences where bullets were found during the investigation had families and children sleeping in them at the time. It is extremely fortunate that no innocent people were seriously injured or killed as a result.
Police are still asking anyone who has any information regarding this incident to immediately contact the Grande Prairie RCMP at 780-830-5701 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

An increase in the number of hash oil extraction labs in the province is putting neighbourhood safety at greater risk due to fires and explosions. Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) are renewing the plea to the public to report marihuana grow-operations due to the risks they pose.
ALERT’s Green Teams, made up of Calgary Police Service (CPS), Edmonton Police Service (EPS) and RCMP members, is familiar with the risks of grow-operations but state that the hash oil extraction process presents a whole new level of danger due to their use of highly flammable chemicals such as butane gas and isopropyl alcohol.
“The hash oil extraction process is extremely dangerous for residents, neighbours, and first responders,” said Sgt. Dwayne Karpo of Green Team North. “We are seeing people try to emulate the process by watching videos on the internet but in some cases the results have been deadly.”
Hash oil is made using the byproduct of a marihuana plant, with the leaves and stems being soaked in butane gas or isopropyl alcohol to extract the potent cannabinoid-containing resin. The process is very dangerous and has led to several explosions and fires in the past year. In May 2013, an explosion at an Evansburg extraction lab killed one man, left another man seriously injured, and completely leveled the home.

Photos: Green Team hash oil explosion |
"Extraction labs pose an increased risk to public safety, as well as emergency first responders," said Fire Marshal Tom Karpa, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services. "The volume of volatile and flammable liquids stored in an extraction lab generally far exceeds the allowable amount for a residential occupancy, greatly increasing the risk of fire and explosion. Firefighters are not expecting these types of volatiles when they respond to an event at a residential occupancy."
The demand for hash oil, or cannabis resin, is attributed to the proliferation to the electronic cigarettes. Users report a more intense high than marihuana and it is more discreet with almost no odour.
In addition to the normal signs of marihuana grow-operations, which can be found here: www.alert-ab.ca/growops, hash oil extraction labs also produce an odour that is quite pronounced. If you suspect a marihuana grow operation in your community, contact police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
More than $27,000 worth of crack cocaine was seized from a Lethbridge man and woman following an Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) investigation.
On April 1st, Lethbridge Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU), an integrated team made up Lethbridge Regional Police Service (LRPS) and RCMP members, seized 274 grams of crack cocaine following a traffic stop on Highway 2 just north of Fort MacLeod.
Tanner White, a 21-year-old man, and Tracy Soltesz, 43-year-old woman, were arrested without incident to conclude a short-term drug trafficking investigation. The two were alleged to be attempting to import the cocaine into the Lethbridge area.
Both were charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking. White also faces additional charges of possession of proceeds of crime and two counts of breaching of recognizance. White was arrested in a previous CFSEU-Lethbridge drug trafficking investigation in December 2013.
A 53-year-old Calgary man has been arrested and is accused of running and operating large-scale marihuana grow-ops in Calgary industrial areas, according to Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT).
Green Team South, an integrated team made up Calgary Police Service (CPS) and RCMP members that investigate and dismantle marihuana grow-ops, arrested Ping Ming Liu on March 20th to conclude a five-month investigation. Liu has been charged with production of marihuana, possession of marihuana, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and mischief to property.
Investigators alleged that Liu was the person responsible for two marihuana grow-ops located in industrial rental units. In August 2013, evidence of a previous grow-op was located in the Airways industrial area in Calgary’s northeast. Then in December 2013, a fully operational 814-plant marihuana grow-op, worth more than $1 million, was located southeast in the Foothills industrial area.
In both instances there was significant damage to the rental units and both were deemed unfit for human habitation by City of Calgary building inspectors and Alberta Health Services. The interior of both units had been converted and used exclusively for the illegal production of marihuana.
No arrests were made at the time of either grow-op being located. Liu was identified as a suspect and Green Team South arrested Liu at his northwest home on March 20th without incident.
Carstairs man charged in historical sex assaults
The Calgary Police Service Child Abuse Unit has charged a man with two historical sex assaults dating back to the 1970s.
The charges relate to two female victims who knew the accused as a pastor at a northwest Calgary Baptist church. The allegations came to the attention of police after a similar case in 2012, where another leader at the same church was charged with sexually assaulting three male victims in the 1980s and 1990s.
The most recent investigation revealed the alleged sexual abuse against one of the females began in 1979 when the victim was five years old and continued until she was 15. The other victim was nine years old when the alleged abuse began in 1986, and it continued until she was 18.
In both cases, the victims were parishioners at the Baptist church where the accused was a religious leader and teacher. The assaults allegedly occurred in the church and at the accused’s then neighbouring home.
On Wednesday, April 9, 2014, police arrested and charged Thomas Larry JONES, 69, of Carstairs, AB. He is charged with:
- Indecent assault of a female
- Three counts of gross indecency
- Four counts of sexual assault
