- October is National Child Abuse Awareness Month - a time for all Albertans to learn about recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect.
Albertans have a role and shared responsibility, along with government, communities and families, in supporting the safety, security and well-being of children.
Reports from the public are essential in helping to identify children and youth who are being abused. If Albertans suspect a child is being abused or neglected, they should call the Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-387-KIDS (5437). They can also call 310-0000 to connect with their local Child and Family Services Authority or Delegated First Nations Agency.
“We need to put our children’s safety and well-being first and ensure they are being protected. I encourage all Albertans – teachers, neighbours, family and community members to pick up the phone and share any concerns they may have about a child’s welfare.” - Sandra Jansen, Associate Minister of Family and Community Safety
What are some signs that a child may be neglected or abused?
- A child who is often hungry or not dressed for the weather.
- A young child who is often left alone.
- A child who is extremely withdrawn or usually aggressive.
- Unexplained bruises or injuries.
- A child who shows unusual knowledge of sexual matters beyond their age of development.
- A child or youth who does not want to be at home or runs away from home.
- A child who is exposed to illegal drug activity.
For many families, early intervention services are all they need to help them parent, manage their child’s behaviour or create a more stable home environment. Additional help is available for families who have more serious challenges.
