Alberta Traffic Services and RCMP air services catching "irresponsible drivers" on Highway 63

Members of the north east Alberta Integrated Traffic Unit, as well as RCMP K Division Air Services conducted concentrated enforcement efforts on the Highways 63 & 881 corridors between September 12 to September 15, 2013.  Speed enforcement conducted consisted of conventional radar and aircraft patrols.

The concentrated effort resulted in 574 total charges being issued to violators.

Some of these charges are broken down as follows:

  • 501 - Speeding violations (Of those, 8 violations were for speeds in excess of 50 km/h over the posted speed limit);
  • 1 - Illegal drug offence;
  • 1 - Careless driving under the provincial statute;
  • 7 - Other Criminal Code charges (which includes 1 - Impaired Driving and 3 - immediate Road Side Suspensions).

The highest speed recorded was 174 Km/h in a 110 km/h portion of Highway 63. The violating vehicle was detected by officers in the RCMP aircraft patrol and was stopped by ITU officers on the ground.  The driver was charged for speeding and given a mandatory court appearance for a later date.

The Integrated Traffic Units continue to work diligently to enhance the safe driving experience for all drivers on Highway 63.  The high number of speed related charges from this four-day operation, indicates that our officers have to continue these enforcement efforts on Highway 63 in order to stop "irresponsible drivers" who are putting other people's lives at risk and demonstrating their lack of respect for the law," says Superintendent Howard Eaton, Officer in charge of the RCMP Traffic Services.  "There are consequences for these violators and these consequences are significant fines, demerit points and court appearances."

Integrated Traffic Units consist of RCMP Traffic Services members and Sheriff Highway Patrol officers working together in a collaborative effort to deliver effective and efficient traffic safety services to Albertans, with a focus on identified enforcement priorities.
