Airdrie RCMP investigating after children were approached by 5 strangers

Grande Prairie RCMP are investigating a suspicious occurrence after two young children were approached and spoken to in a suspicious manner earlier this morning on their way to school.  RCMP do not consider this an attempted abduction at the present time.

This morning at approximately 8:15 a.m. two children were walking to school together in the vicinity of 74th Avenue and Poplar Drive when they were approached by a vehicle with five male occupants.  The vehicle slowed and the driver asked the children "do you want any candy?"  to which the children declined.  The vehicle left north on Poplar Drive and the children continued safely to school where they informed a teacher of what transpired.  The police were called and immediately attended the school to investigate.

No license plate was obtained but witness accounts describe the suspect vehicle as being an older mid-size four door model, possibly burgundy or red in color.  There could also be damage to the rear passenger window.  In the vehicle there is believed to have been five males who were described as African Canadian.  The driver was described as also wearing a black t-shirt with the Metal Mulisha logo on it.

The children were not approached or asked to get into the vehicle, there is nothing to indicate that this was an attempted abduction.   However, issues of this nature speak to the importance of educating children on how to interact with strangers, planning a safe route to school and encouraging them to travel in groups whenever possible.

RCMP continue to investigate and ask anyone who observed this interaction or believed that they saw this suspect vehicle or the suspects to please contact the Grande Prairie RCMP Detachment at 780-830-5701.

Charges laid against prolific pillowcase bandit

During the past four months, police asked for assistance from the public in locating 42 year old Kenneth Wayne FORBES of Onoway, a man wanted on numerous warrants for extensive break and enters throughout the Province of Alberta.

On September 13th, a concerned citizen in Edson made a report of a suspicious individual, and FORBES was arrested.  This would not have occurred without the support of the community, and their partnership with police in helping to keep our communities safe.

It is alleged that the majority of these break and enters occurred during the daytime hours, to acreage/rural subdivision properties.  Police believe FORBES would knock on a residence door, and if someone answered, he would purport to be lost and ask for directions.

One interesting modus operandi is that FORBES is alleged to have removed pillowcases from bedrooms in each break and enter, in order to transport smaller items such as jewelry.

As always, the public is asked to be wary of strangers in their neighborhoods, and to obtain as much detail as possible when encountering unknown persons and vehicles in unlikely situations.

FORBES remains in custody, and has been charged with a large number of offences from various jurisdictions.  Some of these include:
From the Spruce Grove/Stony Plain area: 15 counts of break and enter, from various properties throughout Parkland and Lac Ste Anne Counties. His next court appearance in Stony Plain Provincial Court is October 30th.

From the Edson area:  four counts of break and enter,  possession of stolen property, and possession of a controlled substance- Schedule I.  His next court appearance in Edson Provincial Court is November 5th.

From the Vegreville area:  three counts of break and enter, possession of stolen property, forgery, and possession of a forged document  His next court appearance in Vegreville Provincial Court is October 21st.

From the Evansburg area:  break and enter and theft under $5000.  His next appearance is in Stony Provincial Court on October 30th.

From the Ponoka area:   break and enter, and theft under $5000.  His next appearance in Ponoka Provincial Court is November 1st.
In total, this encompasses 24 counts of break and enter, 2 counts of possession of stolen property, two counts of theft under $5000, 1 count of possession of a controlled substance, one count of forgery, and one count of possession of a forged document.

Mr. FORBES has an extensive criminal record for property offences, including break and enters, and frauds.

Continued Rise of Car Prowlings and Break and Enters to Airdrie Residences

Since approximately September 11, 2013, Airdrie RCMP have been dispatched to over 33 reports of break and enter to residential homes, as well as thefts from personal motor vehicles in the Airdrie suburb areas. Suspects are stealing garage door openers out of vehicles and using them to gain access to the residence through the opened garage door. Suspects have now gone to the extreme of vandalizing vehicles in order to steal the garage door openers by damaging and punching the vehicle door locks. In certain instances the suspects are only opening the garage door 1-3 feet high to gain entry in order to prevent detection and noise.

Given the high rise of reports in a small period of time, Airdrie RCMP are strongly seeking the public assistance in apprehending these culprits. Also, police would like to remind citizens to take extra precautions when securing their property and vehicles by following these suggestions:

  •  Assure all vehicle doors are locked, whether they are parked on the street, in a residence driveway or parkade
  • Do not leave any valuables in your vehicle
  • Do not leave garage door openers in your vehicles, or in plain view (another suggestion is changing your garage door opener to a key fob which can be attached to your key chain)
  • Park vehicles in a well lit area
  • Make sure the access door from the garage to the residence is locked at all times
  • Report any suspicious people, vehicles and occurrences to the RCMP immediately
  • Leave exterior lights to the residence on if possible

Police are asking for assistance in solving this crime and identifying these suspects. If you have any information on this incident please contact the Airdrie RCMP at (403) 945-7200 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.
