During the spring breaks of 2012 and 2013, troops of 20 students each attended the St. Albert RCMP Youth Academy where they saw the RCMP helicopter land by the school, met a police dog, and got to try on RCMP "riot team" gear. The Academy included a visit to the RCMP "K" Division headquarters building where the youth got to try the Police obstacle course that is a requirement for all RCMP applicants.
During the evenings, the students became the "police officers" as they tried out their skills in investigative scenarios. The students investigated crimes under the supervision of senior officers and in some cases, arrested the suspects.
The week wound up with a graduation ceremony complete with a troop marching demonstration shown to the students' families and friends. The Academy has been made possible by donations from the students’ families, the RCMP Foundation, St. Albert Neighbourhood Watch, Capital Pizza, Greater St. Albert Catholic School Division, Sturgeon School Division, Centre Nord Francophone School Division, Ft. McMurray School Division and St. Albert Public School Division. The donations cover the costs of the Academy supplies, food, transportation and the Academy "uniform". The RCMP officers donate their time to this program.
The St. Albert RCMP Youth Academy is one of the few opportunities in Alberta for youth to learn about policing in a hands-on format. Anyone wishing to apply to the program is encouraged to talk to their School Work Experience Coordinator, or they can talk to Cpl.
