The Southwest Rockies finally broke into the win column Oct. 26 at the Crowsnest Pass.
The Rockies thumped the visiting Calgary Edge School Mountaineers 7-1 to improve their South Central Bantam AA Hockey League record to 1-5-1.
The Rockies and Mountaineers were scoreless through the first nine minutes until Jesson Luco got his first of the season to put the home team up 1-0.
Six minutes later the Rockies scored again when Turner Sharp and Nic Jordan set up Chase Snider for his first of the year.
The Rockies struck again just 33 seconds later when Chaz Vance continued a trend and got his first goal of the year. Tyson Goodreau assisted.
The Rockies increased their lead to 4-0 with the only goal of the second period, this one coming off the stick of Cameron Gallant who was appearing in just his second game. Luco drew the assist.
The Edge scored in the second period to make it 4-1, but that was as close as they would come.
The Rockies clinched the victory with three unanswered goals in the third period.
Ethan Richards converted a pass from Luco seven minutes into the third period to make it 5-1. The goal was Richards’ second of the year.
With 6:36 to play Jason Creighton scored his second of the season to make it 6-1, assisted by Gallant.
Less than four minutes later Creighton got his second of the game, unassisted, to make the final 7-1.
Rockies goalie Sean Park made 57 saves to earn the victory.
Venom sting Rockies
Two early powerplay goals Oct. 19 provided Medicine Hat Venom with the margin of victory over the visiting Southwest Rockies.
The Venom scored twice in the first 2 1/2 minutes of the South Central Alberta Bantam AA Hockey League game and went on to a 3-1 win.
Ethan Bartram scored 1:42 into the contest with Medicine Hat holding the man advantage.
Just 49 seconds later Gavin Penner scored with Medicine Hat still on the powerplay and the Venom led 2-0.
The game turned into a defensive struggle after that and it wasn’t until there was just 4:23 left in the second period that Medicine Hat scored again, this one off the stick of Justin Bourassa.
The Rockies did not get on the scoreboard until there was just 4:21 left in the game when Sawyer McAulay got his first goal of the season. The assist came from Cameron Gallant, who was appearing in his first game of the season.
