Operations were suspended and the staff on shift at the time of the incident returned home. Coal Division of Teck Resources Manager of Community and Aboriginal Affairs Nic Milligan says that operations will restart when appropriate.
The BC Ministry of Energy and Mines has been contacted and an investigation into the incident is underway.
From Teck's press release: "No other employees were injured. Appropriate authorities, including the Ministry of Energy and Mines, have been notified and an investigation is now underway into the incident. We wish to extend our sincere condolences to the employee’s family, friends and colleagues."
Coal Mountain Operations is located 30 kilometres southeast of Sparwood in southeastern British Columbia and produces steelmaking and thermal coal.
